In Uttarkhand it is a famous saying that if you want to know about Uttarakhnd, its people, society, life, culture, traditions and politics then either refer to books of scholars or listen to the songs of Nrendra Singh Negi. An institution by himself Shri Negi is amongst the most popular artists of Uttarakhand. He is not a mere entertainer but he is an artist, a singer, a composer and a poet, who is sensitive to his surroundings. Be it the pain of a mother longing for her son, who is in the army, defending his country, a wife longing for her husband who migrated to the plains in the search of job, be it the issue of saving forests, be it the plight of the women of Uttarakhand leading a hard life in the harsh mountains, be it the issue of displacement and damage to environment due to huge dams like the Tehri dam, the problem of land and forest mafia, the high handedness of the forest dept , the problem of addiction to liquor, the threat of the man eaters or the political mayhem created in the state, all is covered by this great artist in his songs.

As a confederation of the various theatre groups, writers and activists, Uttarakhand Sanskritic Morcha was formed in August 1994 to provide creative support to the Uttarakhand Statehood Movement. The founder president of USM was theatre activist Ashok Chakraborty (Dada). Later on Thakur Beer Singh of the Akhil Garhwal Sabha, Dehradun, was elected as the President. USM organized a wide range of activities during the Uttarakhand movement including staging of street plays, organizing state level workshops, publication of books/posters besides direct participation in the agitation. Presented here are few songs of the period. This particular cassette Uttarakhand Key Rangeet was released by USM in 1994. In the absence of a proper recording studio at Dehradun, Shakti Samuha, Mumbai (Naithani Family) sponsored and organized the recordings at Mumbai. Special thanks to Jyothi ! Madan Duklan wrote this song in September 1994 while traveling back to Dehradun from Delhi. Duklan shared his initial draft with USM members at Tip Top Restaurant on Chakrata Road, Dehradun. Grish Sundriyal (Mamu) did the initial composing along with adding the last para of Kitaktaal. Singer Mrs. Shampa Pakrashi as a concerned Indian provided her valuable support. Shampa Ji is a Mumbai based teacher of Hindustani Classical Vocal.

Pratiba Naitthani is an Indian professor and activist. She is known for opposing vulgarity and violence on Indian televisions. Born in Mumbai, her family hails from Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, Pratiba Natthani is currently based in Mumbai. She currently teaches political science at St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. Her father Professor Dr. Shahi Shekar Naitthani founded St. Xavier's Hindi department. She is best known for her Public Interest Ligitation (PIL) filed in the Bombay High Court against the broadcast of all Adult films and programmes on cable television. Due to her efforts, several international channels such as Star Movies and HBO temporarily went off air as they were violating the programming code of India.The Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the High Court of Maharashtra legally support her PIL as the law provided that no Adult content can be shown on television 24 hours. Though she has been given the title of moral police it is actually legal policing. She says that if a film is certified as Adult by the censor board, where by only adult can watch it in a closed theatre then how can the same films be shown on television which is watched by children as well? As per the laws any adult programme can not be shown on a public means. The channels showing violence and sex in India blatantly violated Indian laws where as the same channels abided by the laws of other countries. In India their argument was that they are foreign channels and hence need not follow ...
